Customer experienced potential security threat at melbourne airport carpark, requesting increased security measures and escort to car in the future.
Dear Australian Federal Police,

I would like to bring to your attention an incident that occurred at Melbourne Airport domestic Qantas terminal that my son and I were on flight from Brisbane to Melbourne flight QF639 on 4th April 2024 boarding 19.55 arriving at 23.40. We checked in luggage and collected one case at baggage claim carousel number 3, the Sydney to Melbourne flight also arrived around the same time. Our suitcase was nowhere to be seen we waited in the right place the whole time. We were about to go to the baggage claim desk, then our suitcase was finally visible. Passengers from both flights had left the building, it then left my son and I who is 10 years old in a vulnerable position leaving the terminal with no passengers around to walk alone to the carpark.

We exited outside the airport on level 2 to walk to the overpass (bridge) to our car which was parked on level 3 close to the lifts. As we walked along the footpath to head towards the bridge there were maintenance workmen on the walkway posing to be fixing lights, they all yelled out to each other, and a young maintenance worker turned around and looked at us. His face of shock looking at my son alarmed me that something was not quite right, then three middle aged workmen sat down in a row and instantly got on their mobile phones almost covering their faces, while another workman was walking very close behind us. My son got uncomfortable and looked back at him, only for the workman to look the other direction and hide his face, I counted a total of five or six maintenance workers.

My son and I started walking the overpass bridge, we were the only two passengers in sight walking on it to the carpark. There was one other person of African appearance on the footbridge walking past us walking towards the terminal entrance. Already feeling uneasy passing the workmen, I glanced at this African man noticing him all dressed up and smiling while walking past us. I was wondering why he was walking in when the last remaining flights had landed, and passengers had left. I didn’t see any African people arrive from either flights or any within the terminal waiting for my suitcase and we were there for about 15 minutes, I thought it was a bit odd. He looked all dressed up in a dark blue shirt with white patterns on it, with some blue braided beads in his hair, slim tall build.

While walking about ¾ of the way on the footbridge my son and I both noticed a man in the distance within the carpark on level 2 running quickly and zig zagging in between cars trying to unlock them, he was zig zagging in the direction towards the lifts. My son asked me what he was doing, I said he is trying to break into cars, I stepped up the pace and said let’s hurry up and get out of here. So we quickly approached the lifts, pressed it quickly, the lifts opened straight away, we ran in the lifts, and pressed level 3 button quickly. As the lifts where closing suddenly, I see the same African man quickly walking to the lift to get in with us, and on the right corner of my eye I saw the man who was trying to break into cars running quickly to get in the lift with us also. The man running in between cars looked of Indonesian appearance wearing black.

I had a sense of relief that the lift closed in time and started going up to level 3 and the doors didn’t reopen. It looked and felt like an ambush from both men working together, while the workmen were the distraction and informing these two of potential people to rob. At the time I was more concerned they were going to take my son and put him in a stolen car and take him.

It’s not good enough with the lack of security at the airport especially within the carpark. The footbridge is a perfect setup to block people from both sides and robbing them inside the lifts or stairs with the coverup help and distraction from maintenance workers. The credentials of these workers need to be looked at soon as possible.

Of course, in society it was back onto me that I should not have been travelling with my son at that time. The airport should be a safe place with security, it is more safe in progressive countries like India. It’s an airport and flights arrive late and early hours of the morning. We only had limited flights to choose from to use our points through Qantas and the last flight out from Brisbane was one of the only options. We have one of the most outdated airports in the world with no security within the carpark. It’s an embarrassment and a wakeup call for myself that Melbourne airport is seriously outdated, and very unsafe within the carpark. Carpark security officers, not just cameras needs to be implemented especially in these current times.

Thankfully this incident ended the way it did by the lifts closing just in time. It would have been a very traumatic experience especially for my son who has the right to travel at any time. There should hopefully be undeleted security footage of this incident for your reference from 23.40 on flight arrivals and within 45minutes from that time on 4th April 2024. In future I will be requesting staff or security within the airport to escort us to our car after a flight anytime of the day or night, we no longer feel safe walking in the carpark at Melbourne Airport. I am bringing this to your attention for the safety of future passengers.

Kind regards,

Kylie Gagic – 0407 317 338
Email: kgagic@hotmail.com

Customer complains about aggressive behavior of security officer at melbourne airport, seeking apology and assurance of addressing the issue.
Subject: Unacceptable Behavior by Security Officer at Melbourne Airport

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the behavior of a security officer at Melbourne Airport's domestic area, Lane 3, bag handling and screening,on July 18th, 2024, between 1-1:10 pm. The officer, who wore an ISS vest and appeared to be of Indian descent, was allocated to the area behind Lane 3 for bag handling for screening.

While placing our carry-on luggage on the tray for scanning, this officer suddenly began shouting at us without any provocation. He displayed intimidating behavior, threatening to remove us from the airport if we didn't comply with his instructions. He claimed to have explained the procedure more than 20 times, but his aggressive tone and demeanor were unacceptable.

We had already experienced a stressful day, having missed our previous flight due to an engineering issue. This officer's behavior made our first encounter with Melbourne Airport unpleasant, and we are unlikely to return due to this experience.

I believe the officer needs training on providing proper customer service and treating passengers with respect. His behavior seemed to be a habitual power trip, as he also instructed another female officer to subject me to a more rigorous body check.

The fact that Melbourne Airport hired this type of employee raises concerns not only about the airport's hiring standards but also about the character of the people and the city of Melbourne itself and the broader implications for the community.

I request a formal apology and expect a response regarding the actions you will take to address this officer's behavior. If necessary, I would like to escalate this complaint to ensure that no other passengers face similar mistreatment.

Please contact me via email or phone to discuss this matter further.

Sincerely,
Sunil shrestha
Sunil.shrestha@health.nsw.gov.au

Customer complains about poor security staff behavior at Melbourne Airport, causing distress to children and requesting an apology.
This morning (5am Jetstar Departure Terminal) security/scanning staff were absolutely awful. I have never met such bad customer service, I felt like I was going to jail. My 11 year old daughter was berated for not putting her toy into scan and both children ended up scared and in tears. One lady in particular (I wish I got her name) was simply awful.

I hope the feedback can assist the training and general human interactions here.
